Extraordinary Ministers Of Holy Communion
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EMC), assist the priests during Mass to distribute the Eucharist to the congregation. They are called EMCs because the ordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are ordained priests. As they are called with such an honour to “hold and give” Jesus, they are reminded to be “exemplary” Catholic Christians to others, more so than those in other ministries.
They are appointed by the Rector of the Cathedral and commissioned to carry out their duties. When the need should arise where those serving in the ministry of the Pastoral Care of the Sick and Elderly of the Cathedral are not able to bring Holy Communion to the housebound Catholics or to those who are sick in hospitals, EMCs are expected also to bring the Eucharist to these people who are in need.
